[QUICK READ] How To Eliminate Your Negative Voice When Brainstorming

There are two prominent voices in our heads, a quiet positive voice that always believes you’ll make it, and a dominating negative voice that lists all the reasons that you won’t.

When it comes to running a business, we need to learn how to control the negative voice in order to make any kind of progress.

This certainly doesn’t mean cancelling your Negative Nancy out, in fact, far from it.

It’s time you invited her to the table.

This is a process I learned from Bob Proctor, who knows a thing or two about success.

Next time you have a world dominating idea; or any idea for that matter, and you are working out how this idea could take shape, draw up two columns on a blank page.

Title the left hand column Why I Can’t and the right, How I Can.

In the left column, put lines through it, a big cross, colour it in, draw pictures, just fill it up so there is no room to write down any reason why your idea cannot work.

Then start brainstorming.

Every time you have a reason why your idea won’t work, speak it out loud, with respect, and then say NEXT!

You have no room to write it down, so just keep your thoughts and ideas flowing.

You give her her right to be heard, and while she might come back with the same reason a few times over, that’s perfectly ok, keep going. Keep persisting. Thank her for wanting to keep you safe if she demands more recognition, but keep going until you start to get a flow of inspirational ideas of how your idea can come to shape.

When you have your list of How I Can, start taking action with it. Execute.

That voice is the voice of Love, the voice of the fragment of God and Universe you have within you that will guide you. She is there to be the light on your path, and she waits, ever so patiently, for your voice of Fear to be heard, so she can also be heard.

There are two prominent voices in our heads, a quiet positive voice that always believes you’ll make it, and a dominating negative voice that lists all the reasons that you won’t.

Contrary to popular belief, your negative voice is just as important as your positive.

In today’s world of new age self-care gurus, many of them tell you to ignore the negative voice in order to reach enlightenment.

I prefer balance.

If you try to cancel out your Neg Nancy, she’ll throw a tantrum, turn up her dramatics and not pipe down until she gets what she wants, to be heard.

At least that is what she does with me, and I can ensure you, I’m no different than anyone else.

While she sounds like a self-absorbed pain in the ass, and at times she can be, she’s actually just doing her job, telling you all of your reasons why you should stay exactly where you are, inside your comfort zone.

You know comfortable, you are safe in comfortable, and if you ever leave the comfort zone, Neg Nacy doesn’t know how to protect you out there.

So she feeds you bullshit.

You are not worth it.

You are not good enough.

You are only going to fuck it up.

You will look like an idiot.

You are going to fail.

When you succeed you won’t know how to handle that power.

You don’t have the time, the skills or the money.

Blah blah blah.

As Elizabeth Gilbert says in her book Big Magic, your fears are the most boring thing about you.

We all have this voice in our head.

She’s not uncommon, her fears are not uncommon, and quite frankly if you take one look at our political climate, she is running the world as we know it.

Because after hearing her repetitious cycle of lies, we start to believe her.

I can’t do that.

I can’t afford that.

I don’t have time for that.

I’m not good enough for that.

The good news is the more aware we are at distinguishing the differences of our internal dialog, the more we can make those conscious choices over the direction we take next, and the influence we have over others.

We don’t have to let her run our lives, but we do have to respect her rights, and if she’s untamed she usually speaks first. Listening to her will be fairly quick. Ignoring her will take forever.

This process I read in an excerpt from Bob Proctor’s book You Were Born Rich.

Next time you have a world dominating idea, or any idea for that matter and you are working out how this idea could take shape, draw up two columns on a blank page. Why I Can’t and How I Can.

In the Can’t column, put lines through it, a big cross, colour it in, fill it up so there is no room to write down any reason why your idea cannot work.

If you try to stop your voice of Fear, you stop the flow, and in turn can also stop your voice of Love.
